The story
Co-hosts South Korea, in their first ever World Cup knockout match, beat Italy 2-1 in extra time when Ahn Jung-hwan scored the Golden Goal in the 117th minute. Italy's Christian Vieri had a goal disallowed; Francesco Totti was sent off for a controversial second yellow. Ahn was sacked by his Italian club Perugia within 24 hours by an enraged owner. Korea reached the semifinal — still the best result for any Asian team — and Guus Hiddink became a national hero.
