The story of 1954

The "Miracle of Bern". Hungary's Mighty Magyars — unbeaten for four years and 8–3 winners over West Germany in the group stage — were stunned 3–2 in the final, Helmut Rahn scoring the winner. The highest-scoring World Cup ever by average (5.38 goals per game); Sándor Kocsis hit 11 goals in a losing cause.
