The story

The peak of Hungary's Mighty Magyars — Kocsis with four goals, Puskás with two, in an 8-3 demolition that confirmed Hungary as overwhelming favourites for the tournament. Two weeks later the same teams met again in the final, and Germany won 3-2 in the Miracle of Bern. This group-stage thrashing makes that final result one of the great sporting upsets, not just because of the gap on paper but because Germany used reserve players in the group and rested Helmut Rahn — the eventual final winner.
