Direct answer
The 1934 FIFA World Cup was hosted by Italy (27 May – 10 June 1934) with 16 teams. Champion: Italy. The final was Italy 2–1 Czechoslovakia (a.e.t.) at Stadio Nazionale PNF, Rome. Top scorer: Schiavio/Conen/Nejedlý (4).

The story of 1934

The first World Cup in Europe, and the first decided by a straight knockout from the round of 16. Hosts Italy, under Vittorio Pozzo and heavily politicised by Mussolini's regime, won their first title, beating Czechoslovakia 2–1 after extra time. Uruguay, the holders, boycotted in protest at European no-shows four years earlier — the only champions ever to skip the next tournament.
