The first 24-team World Cup. Paolo Rossi, just back from a betting-scandal ban, won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball as Italy took a third title. Featured the brutal France–West Germany semifinal (Schumacher's foul on Battiston) and Brazil's beautiful but doomed 1982 side.
