The story

A semifinal of strict football economy. Germany, written off entering the tournament, reached the final through Michael Ballack's late header — moments after Ballack picked up a yellow card that ruled him out of the final. Turkey, in their first World Cup knockout campaign since 1954, finished third with a 3-2 win over South Korea. Turkey's coach Şenol Güneş became a national hero.
