Messi enters the record books
Lionel Messi missed an early penalty before producing the moment that rewrote the record book. A composed first-half finish in the 38th minute opened the scoring, then deep into second-half stoppage time (90+5') he added the dagger that took his career World Cup tally to 18 goals — two clear of Miroslav Klose's previous all-time record of 16. He is also the third player ever to score in six consecutive World Cup tournaments, after Just Fontaine (1958) and Jairzinho (1970).
After Argentina's opening 3-0 win over Algeria, in which Messi netted a hat-trick, his double in Arlington moved him past Klose for sole possession of the top of FIFA's all-time scoring chart. Klose himself sent a congratulatory message to Messi after the final whistle, completing a moment the World Cup will remember for decades.
