The 1966 FIFA World Cup was hosted by England (11–30 July 1966) with 16 teams. Champion: England. The final was England 4–2 West Germany (a.e.t.) at Wembley, London. Top scorer: Eusébio (9).
The story of 1966
England's only World Cup, on home soil. Geoff Hurst scored the only hat-trick in a final, including the still-debated "did it cross the line?" goal off the crossbar. Eusébio's Portugal lit up the tournament; North Korea stunned Italy. Bobby Moore lifted the trophy at Wembley.
