The story of 1930
The first FIFA World Cup, hosted and won by Uruguay to mark the centenary of their independence. Only 13 teams entered — just four from Europe after a long Atlantic boat journey deterred many. Uruguay came from 2–1 down to beat neighbours Argentina 4–2 in front of 68,000 at the purpose-built Estadio Centenario. Argentina's Guillermo Stábile top-scored with 8 goals despite not starting the tournament as first choice.
